Misplaced Modifiers

A modifier is a word or phrase that describes a subject, verb, or object. The modifier is said to dangle when the word it modifies has been left out of the sentence. Correct a dangling modifier by adding the word or words that have been left out of the sentence.

Wrong:
Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
Right:
When you write carefully, you must avoid dangling participles.
